The Farr 40 was designed to offer a fast, maneuverable and owner-driven racing yacht at an affordable price. The boat was designed taking into account the IMS handicap system, but at the same time so that the speed would not be sacrificed to a favorable score. The result was a boat with lower displacement, higher stability and sail area than typical yachts optimized for the IMS system.
